Tal Renner was bullied a lot as a child. Now, he hopes to make a difference in people’s lives by joining up with the Aegis Online branch of the new Colonial Navy. A naval career would allow him to do just that, but his enlistment is denied and it looks like his life may be headed nowhere.
When he tries to help a seemingly innocent man, his world is turned upside-down. Within a matter of hours, his life is in danger, he's branded a criminal, and he is on the run. To get to safety and clear his name, he stows away aboard a mysterious vessel, with a group of unlikely heroes. A group of thieves, scoundrels, and grifters who make a living using their abilities to help those in need, by working outside the law. But will they help him after they find him hiding aboard their ship?

I loved this book. I didn't want to put it down. It is a wonderful sci-fi adventure set in a very full world where corporations rule lunar colonies, and the "dregs" of humanity live out in the asteroid belt. The fact that Paul managed to incorporate a band of fairies into it without making it seemed contrived, is even better. The story follows the tale of Tal, a young man turned down for an internship with a ruling corporation who gets dragged into the underworld when his moral compass causes him to intervene in a situation he probably shouldn't have. He quickly finds himself in the company of an odd band of rogues who call themselves Pandora Celtica. And what ensues is a tale full of twists and turns, advanced science, and just a little bit of magic.Paul did a wonderful job exploring the personas of Pandora Celtica (There really is a band called Pandora Celtica, and they really do sing the songs Paul gives the lyrics to in the book.), giving them extraordinary, yet believable skills, fully within the scope of his sci-fi world.
Full disclosure - I am engaged to Shadowcat. Yes, you read that right. I'm engaged to one of the characters in the book - at least the real life version anyway. I am also a writer, so while I may be biased about Shadowcat and Pandora Celtica, I understand what it takes to write a story like this, and I think Paul really pulled it off.

Essequibo River eBook Paul Lell David Magoun Aimee Heckel Reviews
Once again Paul has thrilled me with his story, characters, and imagination. Essequibo River is a wonderful mix of mystery, intrigue, fantasy and sci-fi. All my favorite things.
Usually when I see a book labeled "Sci-Fi/Fantasy" I expect one or the other. It's rare that you get BOTH. Futuristic, space traveling adventure? Check. Mesmerizing fairies/what have you? Check. A space ship that looks like the Weasley brothers repeated their Great Hall swamp performance? I'll take it.
I've had the delight of seeing Pandora Celtica perform in person. I'm fairly certain nothing I owned disappeared, but time did stop for a while, and we always emerged dazed from the venue. It was so fun to read about them, although people unfamiliar with the group might be rather confused. Aside from them, it was a good story of a bumbling young man having a VERY bad couple of weeks as he accidentally gets caught between the government and the mob. For once, you CAN trust the fairies . . . but just how far?
I read the dead tree copy, which could use a little attention from an editor. I don't know if the ebook has received that attention.
